Philosopy

Each student has individual needs and abilities. I strive to adjust to each student's learning style and remain open to trying new methods until the student understands the material and feels accomplished at piano playing. I am able to be flexible and spontaneous as well as structured. I love seeing a student connect with the music and find a new form of self expression!

My home is located in the redwood forest which provides an inspirational atmosphere for learning!

Frequently Asked Questions:

At what age do you start piano lessons?     Answer: I begin teaching at age 8, sometimes age 7 depending upon the student's readiness and ability to sit for a half hour lesson. Also, an ability to read and learn new words is important. Younger children do not have the fine motor skills for piano playing, and though some do start earlier, success and love of music is better achieved by starting later. Music schools offer great group classes for younger children, emphasizing gross motor skills and notes and rhythms more appropriate for that age group.

Do you have to own a piano?    Answer: Yes! A piano is necessary to develop the finger strength and dexterity to play the piano. A keyboard can be used but only if the keys are full size and weighted to mimic the touch of a real piano. Keyboards also need to be at least 5 octaves in order to be useful. Within the first level books, a full sized keyboard or spinet sized piano will be necessary.

How often do you need to practice?    Answer: A beginner needs to spend 20 minutes a day at 5 days a week to make reasonable progress. As soon as you reach level 2 books, a half hour is necessary due to the length of the pieces/songs. Eventually, 45 minutes to an hour, 5 days a week, will be necessary to sustain learning and continue progressing. Of course the more time spent practicing the faster the student progresses. These guidelines are a MINIMUM of time needed.
